Day 1: Gunnison to Silverton

After leaving the Black Canyon we made our way towards Silverton for our first night's stay. The drive up to Ouray, which is on the way, was amazing.

But the drive from Ouray to Silverton was quite possibly the most beautiful drive I have ever made. The pictures can't do it justice, but here's a shot.

Silverton

Silverton is a great little town; I think I could move there and live there year round. That time of year there was very little tourism; and there were only a couple of restaurants open after we had checked into our hotel. The one we chose was quiet and we got to know some of the locals. On a funny note, the waiter said it wasn't the right season for barbecue sauce :)

We stayed at The Bent Elbow in one of the Balcony Suites (The Bordello). The hotel was very nice and new, but it was obvious we were in a very old building. The floors were not quite straight, and the noises from an old-time party going on down stairs woke us up several times. We would stay there again, tho.
