From Silverton we drove south through Durango, took a right and headed further west out to Mesa Verde National Park. (National Park #2 for this trip.)

Mesa Verde National Park is a series of mesas in southwestern Colorado which contain many ancient cliff dwellings. Many Native American tribes have stories that point back to times when their ancestors lived in the area.

The dwellings are very impressive to see. This national park was easily the highlight of our trip.

Cliff Palace: The Cliff Palace at Mesa Verde, Colorado.

Tower House: The Tower House is not accessible to visitors, but there is an overlook.

Kiva: A Kiva is a ceramonial area of a dwelling that served a practical purpose of providing a closed-in warm area in the winter and a cool area in the summer. This Kiva is accessible in a restored dwelling near a visitor's center.

Sun Temple: An artsy view of a sun temple. The interior cannot be reached by tourists.
