Day 1: Denver to Gunnison

We left Denver on Friday morning and made our way west to Gunnison, getting there in time for lunch.

Gunnison

For lunch we found a great little place to eat called Mario's Pizza which is on the south side of Hwy 50 in the center of town. There are these little booths on the sides of the restaurant that even a small person has to squeeze into. There are tables too, of course.

Most of the pictures on this trip were taken with the Sony DSC-828 8MP camera (borrowed, with many thanks, from a coworker).

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

After lunch we continued to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, our first National Park of the trip. Because we were planning on visiting three National Parks on the trip we chose to buy the National Parks Pass which is good at all Nation Parks for 1 full year.

The Black Canyon proved to be a short visit, and the drive to the bottom of the Canyon from the west entrance to the park was not worth the time. There were many great views from the top of the canyon, however. The painted wall is one of the more famous views in the Canyon.

It's very hard to tell from that picture just how huge and deep that canyon is, so I've included a picture of the scale of the wall. Notice, the canyon at this point is twice as deep as the Empire State Building is tall.
